Dead Lake

The second part of our trip to Minnesota was spent at Dead Lake (near Perham, MN) with Dan's family and some of the Mauer's closest friends.  We spent the week swimming, playing in the sand, fishing, playing games after the kids were in bed, and relaxing. It was a wonderful vacation.

Here are three photos of Barb with Gavin and Allie. It was hard to get all three looking at the camera and smiling!

Allie went fishing with her daddy for the first time. I don't think Dan will ever forget her first trip fishing with him.  I know there will be many more fishing trips to come in the future!

She caught one...with Dan's help.  She liked to "steer" (or reel) the fish in.  Dan said it was pretty cute.  Although she looks very skeptical of the fish in the picture below, I'm told she wasn't afraid of it and even touched the fish, which is more than her mother will do. :)

Gavin caught one too.

And so did Brennan.

Here is one of the fish that Dan caught that week.

Brennan and Allie looking for fish in the lake before the boat even left the dock.

We celebrated Gavin's third birthday and Allie was as excited about his gift as he was.

John Deere, Gavin's favorite!

This isn't a great picture of either one, but I am posting it just because I think they look so much alike. Even though Gavin is six months older than Allie, I think they look like they could be twins.  They were best buddies all week and it was pretty cute to watch.

We went to the "International"Turtle Races in Perham again this year and I am happy to report that Allie was once again the international participant.  It went much better this year than last year, considering that last year she spent the entire race crying.

Getting ready to start.

Dan is introducing the turtle to Allie.

The race!

Allie's turtle didn't win. It could have been because when picking the turtle, Dan tried to pick the one that looked the slowest. The problem with the International Turtle Race is that if your turtle wins its heat, you have to wait for ALL the heats to finish before racing in the finals. All that waiting around in the hopes that you will win a dollar.  Dan did the cost/reward analysis and decided it wasn't worth it.  Maybe next year! :)

It was a great trip and we feel blessed to have such wonderful family on both sides.  We have one last trip this summer to Colorado Springs with my family.  Until then, we will enjoy this Canadian summer!

Happy Birthday Dan!

Happy birthday Dan! Only in Canada can you celebrate a July 16 birthday by going out for ice cream in fleece jackets. Brrrr! :)

4th of July

We got back yesterday from two weeks in Minnesota. Allie and I spent the first week at Love Lake with my side of the family and then we spent the second week with Dan at Dead Lake with his family. We had a blast and it was hard to come back to rainy, cool Canada yesterday. I'll post more about the trip soon, but here are some photos from the 4th of July at Love Lake.

Every year we have the tradition of marching in a parade between all of the family cabins. In the past we've blasted John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" in the cabins and then we progressed to blasting the song from a car as the parade followed the car. This year, we upgraded to following the decorated golf cart (which we have to help my uncle Art get around) while blasting "Stars and Stripes Forever" from Boise speakers hooked up to an iphone. My how times have changed! Allie had a blast with her cousins (Daniel is missing since he was taking a nap).

The two sisters leading the parade.

Even though our little cutie has lived most of her life in Canada, she still is proud to celebrate the 4th of July.

Poppy and baby Caleb who is getting SO big, SO quickly!

Caleb with both grandparents.

These two are so cute!

The entire parade with my uncle Art behind the wheel. These memories will last me the rest of my life!

It was a great celebration!  Although we do like living in Canada, being home for the 4th was a blessing for me because living abroad makes me more patriotic than ever before! :)
